Getting Started

What is WikiProfessional? WikiProfessional is an effort to promote the sharing of information and wisdom among researchers and groups who are working in the life sciences and beyond. Lots of people are constantly improving this Wiki by making frequent changes, all of which are recorded on the history page. The first step, if you haven't done so already, is to set up a user account so you can edit pages. We would prefer if you use your real name, so you can get the credit you deserve for your contribution.

How can I participate? Don't be afraid to edit. Anyone can edit almost any page, and we encourage you to be bold but please don't vandalize! Just find a concept that can be improved and add to it or fix the data that is already present. An easy edit to make is the link to your own publications. If you see data that is supported by one of your own publications, start by just clicking the edit tab. Find the data on the edit page and click the blue "Reference Information" link. Open "Link to other Web sites" and select PubMed from the drop down, add the url that points to your abstract, and maybe a label, then click "Save" at the bottom of the page. Voila! You've made an edit. All edits are valuable, so go ahead. Edit the data on a specific concept and help make WikiProfessional the most up-to-date information source on the Internet!

I have data to add to a concept but I don't know where it should go. It is always possible to add any amount of text to a concept's discussion page. Just find the correct concept, click on the discussion tab and then click the edit tab. Editing the discussion page is just like editing any normal Wiki. With any luck, another contributor will come along behind you and go through the text on the discussion page and add it to the appropriate sections of the main concept page.

What lies within? In the Wiki there are different pages for proteins, genes, biomedical concepts, and even concepts some people might consider outside the scope of life sciences!

Here are a few details about the gene and proteins pages that may help new contributors. A protein page can be for a dedicated species, for instance Glucose oxidase precursor (Aspergillus niger). There is also a page for Glucose oxidase precursor in general. If you have data to add but it does not pertain to a specific species, it can be added on the general page. The same goes for genes, kcnma1 is the general gene page, and kcnma1 (Xenopus laevis) is the species specific gene page.
